32 super fun things to do on rainy days for adults

If you’re looking for indoor activities for adults, keep reading!

Undoubtedly, everyone likes sunny and warm days. Although summer isn’t over yet, autumn is approaching, and soon we’ll experience more and more rainy days.

Staying inside when it’s raining can be a great way to unwind and enjoy indoor activities.

I personally love rainy days. There’s something so soothing about sitting on your bed, drinking hot chocolate, and listening to rain pour down the windows.

However, rainy weather can be an incredible mood disruptor, especially since there’s really almost nothing interesting to do when it’s raining.

Fortunately, I have a solution. I’ll tell you all about 32 fun indoor activities for adults at home that you can do to beat boredom. Let’s get started.

It’s time to show you some productive things to do on a rainy day

1. Read books

It’s difficult to find time to read, but the rainy weather is an excellent opportunity to finally pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read for months.

Spend some time reading a book while sitting comfortably on the sofa with a soft blanket and a cup of tea.

Reading is far better for both your eyes and your brain than staring at a smartphone. Reading allows you to escape into another world for a while and clear your mind.

Everyone will be able to find something to read. Reading both relieves and develops daily stress, so it’s certainly one of the best rainy-day ideas.

2. Invite a friend over

Instead of being home alone on a rainy day, invite a friend over. When you spend time with someone, a rainy day becomes less dull and boring.

You can do most of these activities both alone and with a friend, so if you have a friend over, there are plenty of things you can do together.

Rainy days are also great for playing video games, having long conversations, or watching movies. If you don’t want to be alone at home, invite a friend over for coffee or pay them a visit.

3. Gather together the things you want to donate

With all of this cleaning and tidying, you may come across items that you no longer use or need. Instead of throwing away good things, collect them all and give them away.

Let’s be honest: if you haven’t worn this dress in a few years, it’s unlikely you’ll ever do that.

You’ll undoubtedly discover a significant number of clothes or other items that you don’t need and weren’t aware existed.

Old clothes, checks, and broken tech gadgets collect dust and take up unnecessary space.

However, you’ll undoubtedly come across items that are perfectly functional and usable. Set these items aside to recycle them or sell them on a trading portal.

This gives you more space in your home while also allowing you to earn a little extra money.

Also, remember to thoroughly wash your clothes before giving them to the new owner.

4. Work out at home

You don’t have to stop working out just because you’re at home. To stay fit, you can do a variety of workouts at home. Dancing, Pilates, yoga, ballet, and weight training are all nice options.

Get these very affordable resistance bands and these colorful dumbbells ready. There are thousands of different training videos on the internet.

Working out is one of my favorite rainy-day activities for adults because everyone can find something to their liking, whether it’s yoga, cardio, or strength training.

Choose a video, find a coach you like, and get started. Or, you can find a free workout app and enjoy the workouts hosted by a virtual trainer—just like in the gym.

5. Build something

When was the last time you picked up a hammer, a paintbrush, or a screwdriver? Perhaps you could start a new project right away.

It doesn’t have to be anything complicated—simply repaint the closet or construct a simple birdhouse.

This is an excellent time to complete home repairs. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean replacing the bathroom tiles or redesigning the entire heating system.

It’s relatively easy to fix all of the minor issues that would otherwise bother you on a daily basis. You’ll not only increase the value of your real estate, but you’ll also experience positive emotions.

6. Put your knowledge to the test in a memory game

Sitting in a room with no pleasurable activities can lead to boredom. You must constantly stimulate your brain in order for your senses to be clear and your mind to be sharp.

Sudoku and crossword puzzles are both appropriate for this. You can also play memory games like this one to spend time with friends or family members who share your interests.

This will keep your mind sharp and provide you with a lot of new information.

7. Do a major cleaning with your technology

This doesn’t mean replacing the old with the new, but rather cleaning the smartphone of bacteria and viruses. When was the last time you used special tools to clean the surfaces of your phone?

You should clean your smartphone once a day because it collects a lot of bacteria. You wash your hands, but you also touch the phone with unwashed hands. It’s certainly something to think about.

Here’s a smartphone sanitizer that also acts as a phone charger box. It’s a must-have, for sure.

In addition to surface cleaning, thoroughly clean the inside of the phone (not physically).

Each of us has apps on our phones that we haven’t used in a long time, but they take up storage space. You can also delete photos that you no longer need.

8. Clean your house

You don’t have to wait until spring to do spring cleaning. I love organizing things so much that it’s certainly among my favorite indoor activities for adults.

Clean room after room and sort your belongings into three categories: trash, items that can be sold, and items that can be given away.

It may appear to be extremely inconvenient at first, but everyone has tedious cleaning jobs, and if you’re behind on them, a rainy day is ideal for completing them.

Do all of your dirty laundry, dust the shelves, replace your bed linens, and do the dishes.

Make cleaning enjoyable. Put on some good music and sing and dance while cleaning.

Look through your closet for clothes you haven’t worn in years and items that haven’t been used. Throw away anything that’s broken.

Donate anything that’s still in good condition; the next owner will appreciate it.

When was the last time you cleaned the highest shelf in the hallway? Are there any dresses in your closet that you wore ten years ago? Work on these things.

9. Cook something new

Get out your dusty cookbooks, see what ingredients you have at home, and then choose a recipe to try. If you succeed, you’ll be able to enjoy the prepared food after cooking.

If you don’t succeed the first time, try again. When it’s raining, you’ll have plenty of time.

Make an old-fashioned recipe book of your favorite dishes to keep your favorite recipes on hand at all times.

It’s kind of like an interior design element. Cooking with family or friends will make it even more enjoyable.

Here’s my favorite cookbook of one-pan wonders.

If you don’t want to spend your time cooking, try learning some drink recipes instead. There are numerous cocktails that you can make for yourself and your friends.

And cocktails don’t necessarily mean the consumption of alcoholic beverages. There are also exciting non-alcoholic cocktail recipes that are extremely tasty.

10. Play board games

Games are a fun way to pass the time until the sun comes out again. Play board games with your friends.

We’ve all got a stack of board games that have been sitting in a drawer or on a shelf for a long time, just waiting to be played. Now is the time to get started!

Involve your family or friends in the game and spend quality time with them. Playing board games is also a good way to improve communication.

A double-board game of backgammon is a good option. It’s one of the world’s oldest two-person board games, in which the player must try their luck by throwing dice and employing clever strategy. This Exploding Kittens board game is also a best-seller on Amazon!

They also sell sets of chess and backgammon, providing yet another opportunity for brainstorming.

You can relive your childhood by playing Ludo or Othello, both of which are suitable for two or four players.

Aside from classic board games like Monopoly and Scrabble, there are quite a few newcomers on the market.

11. Pamper yourself with a home spa day

Relax in a soothing jacuzzi while listening to relaxing music. This is one of the greatest things to do on a rainy day at home, because who doesn’t love self-care?

You don’t have to go out to purchase a calming face mask like this one or an effective body scrub for dull skin. You can make them at home as well.

Apply a face and hair mask, and then paint your nails. Light candles, listen to your favorite playlist, and curl up in the corner of the sofa to read a magazine.

Rather than doing something with someone, devote the day to yourself and enjoy simply hanging out.

Here are some more relaxing self-care ideas if you’re feeling uninspired.

12. Move the furniture around

Rearranging a room can sometimes make it feel more fresh and cozy.

Besides, you may discover that relocating furniture can free up more space, and you may discover lost items under furniture that you never expected to see again.

Lifting furniture, on the other hand, is similar to physical training. Various studies have found that arranging furniture improves mood and provides extra energy.

Small changes, on the other hand, can make a big difference visually, and instead of replacing old furniture with new, relocating existing furniture is often enough.

Home changes are a good alternative to a daily routine break.

13. Plan your next vacation

Just because you can’t travel right now doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fantasize about it. Why not plan right now where you’re going and what you’re going to do there? Make future travel plans.

14. Start meditating

You’re probably surprised to see meditating among these fun indoor activities for adults. But hear me out.

Meditation has provided support and help to many people. The most difficult part is getting started.

You might want to give it a shot now that you’re at home. You can get tips from different apps, books, and videos.

Here’s a breathing Buddha to help you with guided breathing.

15. Write

If you enjoy writing, write. Nobody is expecting you to be Shakespeare. Share your ideas and opinions with others.

If it’s something you’ve been thinking about for a while, now’s a great time to finally start a blog.

16. Spend time with your friends and family

Invite friends and family to dinner or a movie night. You certainly have friends whose lives have taken them further away, perhaps even to another country or continent.

This doesn’t mean that you should stop communicating. You can keep in touch with them by making phone calls or video chats over the Internet.

17. Start a new project

There are millions of step-by-step tutorials on the internet. You may have already decided what you want to do but haven’t found the time. A rainy day is a great way to get started.

Pinterest is a great place to find step-by-step instructions for DIY projects. Simply search for what you want to do and select the best option.

Besides, you can learn everything from rope braiding to origami on YouTube.

18. Volunteer

Volunteering is certainly among the most honorable indoor activities for adults. There are numerous opportunities for volunteering, both in person and online.

You could, for example, teach someone your native language by having Zoom calls with them.

19. Use streaming services

Pick your favorite. You can watch world-class orchestral and theater performances online, admire the northern lights, or see what the zoo residents are up to.

If videos aren’t your thing, you can always listen to podcasts. They have become very popular over the last few years, and the possibilities are endless.

You can listen to interviews, book summaries, or even stand-up comedy.

20. Enjoy the rain

Put on stylish rubber boots, grab a large umbrella, and go for a walk. The air is especially fresh and clean when it rains. Don’t be disturbed by the weather. Try to see everything as a positive.

21. Watch a movie you haven’t seen

Browse Netflix or order a movie you’ve been wanting to see for a long time. Grab a large sherpa fleece blanket and a bowl of popcorn, and sit back and relax.

It’s one of the greatest rainy day ideas because you can start innocently watching your favorite movies without wasting a sunny day.

A rainy day is also ideal for a movie marathon. Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Die Hard are all well-known film series.

Or you can even watch documentaries and recordings of concerts and plays.

22. Take a nap

When it’s foggy and rainy outside, it’s the perfect atmosphere for a cozy afternoon nap. Relax while listening to the rain. It has been proven that taking a nap can help you improve your mood.

When the rain makes you sad or angry, taking a nap may be the best thing you can do to feel better.

23. Have a picnic

The weather shouldn’t stop you from eating on your carpet in the living room, next to the fireplace. You can serve something different instead of traditional summer meals and drinks.

You can lie back and relax in the room without worrying about getting grass stains on your clothes.

24. Craft something

Find out what you enjoy crafting, because stormy days are ideal for it.

Don’t worry if you don’t know how to do certain crafts; there are simple tutorials on the Internet that show you how to start knitting or crocheting.

If you’re bored and looking for fun things to do at home for adults, that’s it!

When was the last time you made mosaics, colored in a coloring book for adults, or picked up a set of watercolors like these?

Sew something new, such as a new skirt out of old clothes, or sew a button back on your jacket.

Alternatively, if you enjoy knitting, crocheting, or embroidery, pull out your yarn rolls and get started.

25. Sort through your old photos

If you’re looking for good rainy-day ideas, this is it!

Everyone has some photos that they haven’t sorted through. Whether they are from a vacation, a wedding, an engagement, a glamorous dinner, or just random phone clicks.

Use a rainy day to organize your photos and place them in folders. You can also spend some time looking through photo albums.

Remember all of the good times, loved ones, and vacations you’ve taken.

26. Coloring books for adults

Why not give it a shot right now?

Pick a coloring book with a suitable theme (flowers, animals, birds, patterns, people, etc.) or print out some pictures, purchase crayons or a set of felt-tip pens, and start coloring.

Here’s my favorite coloring book for adults (hint: it includes swear words!).

27. Gather inspiration from the internet

Browse the web. Visit internet forums, blogs, and online magazines; watch YouTube videos; read the news; and talk with friends.

If you tried relocating the furniture as I mentioned before and you feel like it wasn’t enough, you can try finding inspiration from various interior blogs or Pinterest.

Read, investigate, and save exciting ideas for later. This way, you’ll be able to learn new tricks and tips to try.

28. Organize your things

As I mentioned before, organizing is one of my favorite ideas for adults on rainy days. Spend a rainy day cleaning up and getting rid of unnecessary items.

Start with one room and work your way through all of them.

Examine the loose stacks of paper and checks, fold and organize your clothes, and put away the items that have been left lying around.

If you have a lot of papers, keep them in separate folders. Organizing things makes it easier to find them later.

Organize your closets and drawers in the bathroom as well. You might be surprised at how many unnecessary items you have in these areas.

Discard empty bottles, place all loose cotton pads and cotton swabs in suitable containers like these ones, and place your cleaning products in one place.

29. Sing karaoke

Hold a karaoke contest. Almost every song has a karaoke version on YouTube, so there are plenty of options.

Feel like a pop star, grab a hairbrush instead of a microphone, and start singing your heart out.

30. Do nothing

You don’t have to do anything if you have free time. Resting and relaxing are equally important as learning new things and constantly taking action. Take a nice, relaxing nap.

You don’t have to do everything all the time. You can absolutely rest every now and then. Falling asleep to the sound of rain is incredibly soothing.

31. Make lists

Besides organizing, making lists is also among the most fun things to do on a rainy day for adults.

Make a list of things you want to change around the house, places you want to visit, vacation plans, and things you haven’t done yet—whatever you want to do, a list will help you get there faster.

Here’s a list of fun lists to make to give you some inspiration.

32. Learn something new

This is among some really cool indoor activities for adults.

Access to various courses and classes is one of the many benefits that the Internet offers. Have you ever wanted to learn Japanese? Start now!
